The Aral Sea is located in Central Asia, within Uzbekistan(south) and Kazakhstan (north). The region was apart of the Soviet Union, which in the 1960s diverted the rivers that fed into the sea. It has since then shrunk by over 75%, creating a multitude of issues, ranging from climatic to humanitarian. The region faces poverty with little hope for help from a poor government. The Uzbeki part of the sea has seen no extensive aid, compared to the northern section.
